No open containers on streets, sidewalks, parks, or beaches
This includes walking with a drink
Alcohol is only allowed inside licensed venues
(Unlike some East Coast beach towns, “to-go” drinks are not a thing here.)
-
Most beaches close at night
Typical closing time: 10:00 p.m. to midnight
Being on the sand after hours can result in a ticket

Fires are only allowed in official fire rings
Found mainly in Huntington Beach and Newport Beach
No fire ring = no fire (even small ones)
-
Rules vary by city and season
Most beaches allow dogs early morning or evening only
Summer restrictions are common
Huntington Dog Beach is the only year-round, off-leash option
-
Quiet hours usually start around 10:00 p.m.
Enforced in residential and beach areas
Late-night parties = complaints or fines
-
Highly restricted
Not allowed near theme parks, state parks, or crowded beaches
Permits required in many areas
-
Photo shoots, events, pop-ups, fitness classes, or filming in public spaces usually require a permit
This includes beaches and parks
-
Parking rules are strictly enforced, especially near the coast
Always check signs for meters, permits, and overnight rules
Coastal cities ticket aggressively
When unsure, check posted signs or the city website. Orange County cities enforce rules city-by-city, and “I didn’t know” won’t get you out of a ticket.
